A Personal Parable

Shellycarlson.com | Blog: A Personal Parable

So, animal lovers, hold onto your hats, this is a strange one.  All turns out well in the end though, I promise, so don’t stop reading.

I was driving to work after picking up some groceries for a Food Science lab that would take place later that day at school. Weaving through the back streets of town I spied a pick up truck with three large dogs in the back bed ahead of me. Was one of them a St. Bernard? With some agile driving (I wasn’t speeding) I caught up to them and just as I craned my neck to see that third dog, which was indeed a St. Bernard, it jumped from the truck bed- dangling by it’s collar that was attached to the truck by a leash!

I know that is a terrible picture, but I promised you it would turn out ok and there is a purpose for telling you about it, so hang in there (no pun intended)!  [Read more…]

A Portal to Heaven- Mom’s First Mother’s Day in Heaven

Shellycarlson.com | Blog: A Portal To Heaven - Mom's First Mother's Day in Heaven

“You need to come soon if you would like to see mom before she passes, her vitals are slowing down. Wait…, I think she may be gone. She is gone, Mom just passed away.”

That was the jist of the phone conversation the evening my mother died, February 22, 2016. She was 92 years old. Even though she had passed I had a strong desire to be present with her, so a fast decision was made to drive an hour down to the nursing home to join the other siblings gathered there and to have an opportunity to be with mom for a few minutes. Could You Give Me a Light?

Shellycarlson.com | Blog: Could You Give Me a Light?

Have you ever awakened completely disoriented and wondered where you were?

That is exactly what happened when I slept in our guest room when I had a cough and didn’t want to wake up my husband. It is a basement room and it’s like a cave down there, very little light comes in. I awakened early and my eyes tried to find something in the room to help get my bearings.

“Where am I? What’s that?” The eyes focused intently on the little light to my left. “Oh, it’s the little light on the smoke alarm.”

That small fact helped my mind shift around on the mental map of the house and immediately I knew where I was, how to find my way to the door, and more importantly, find the way to the bathroom. [Read more…]

Rejoice When?

Shellycarlson.com | Blog: Rejoice When?

Take a few moments to read Philippians chapter 4. It’s difficult to miss a theme running through it, isn’t it?

“I always pray with joy”, “because of this I rejoice”, “I will continue to rejoice”, “joy in the faith”, “make my joy complete”, “be glad and rejoice with me”, “rejoice in the Lord”… you get the point!

Philippians 4 caps it off with words to paint on the inside of our eyelids. “Rejoice in the Lord always.” When? Did he say always? Always? [Read more…]

Creatively Grateful

Shellycarlson.com | Blog: Creatively Grateful

Do you remember when the Wizard of Oz movie shifted from black and white to color? The invention of color cinematography brought us from the tornado in Kansas to the beautiful land of Oz and lit up the screen with vividly colored images. Can you imagine seeing the munchkins or Emerald City in black and white?

Last night I spent a little over an hour sewing a super hero cape for my granddaughter’s dress up box. The next item will be a little pioneer dress and apron like her mother (my daughter) wore when she was little. [Read more…]
