A number of years ago our family was studying the medieval time period while home educating our children. One of the reasons beautiful cathedrals were built then was to bring people in to worship God and to help them find hope and comfort in the difficult circumstances of the times.
The kids and I could almost imagine how it felt to stand in a beautiful cathedral and lift our eyes to the huge stained glass windows depicting Bible stories. These stained glass windows were called the “Bible of the poor” as most could not read, write or understand the priest speaking in Latin. The Bible story pictures in the windows were, for many, the only way they could “read” the Bible and hear God’s Word.
For an art project, we decided to make our own stained glass windows. A friend offered her left over, broken pieces of glass from her stained glass work which was awesome (thanks, Barb). An 8×10” black picture frame was used as the base of the project after taking the cardboard, paper and matt out and leaving just the glass. Epoxy glue, and we were ready to go.
The kids begged me to make my own project so I’d leave my hands off of theirs, so I obliged!
When I’m in need of creative inspiration for a project, it is natural to turn to a subject that has been used by God to bring His creative message of inspiration to my heart. So the personal parable God had whispered to me on a walking trail came to my mind…
“This wildflower blooms in worship for Me and fulfills its purpose even if no one else sees it. I let you happen onto it so you could hear Me speak to you today.”
Wildflowers. Of course!
And that’s what came forth as the bits of colored glass were glued into the black frame. It’s a very simple piece, but it’s been displayed in the kitchen ever since, my own “Bible of the poor in spirit”. The wildflowers in the stained glass are a reminder of the message God spoke through a wildflower.
What is God using in His creation as a personal parable to speak to you? What is His message to your heart?
God, thank you that you speak primarily through Your written Word but you can also speak to us personally through nature and through the pictures in art such as a stained glass window.

Several more posts about wildflower inspired creations will be coming in the next few weeks with a drawing for a free piece of wildflower artwork. Stay tuned!
